Released in 2004 via XL Recordings, Always Outnumbered Never Outgunned marked a bold shift for The Prodigy. After a long hiatus since The Fat of the Land the group returned without Keith Flint or Maxim on vocals relying on Liam Howlett and a roster of guest artists to rewire their sound.
The album opens with Spitfire a snarling track featuring Juliette Lewis that sets a gritty tone. Girls blends sleazy electro-funk while Memphis Bells flirts with glitchy cut-ups. Tracks like Hotride and Wake Up Call nod to electroclash and punk with fast edits and industrial tension.
Guest appearances include Liam Gallagher on Shoot Down and Kool Keith as Keith Thornton on Wake Up Call. The record leans heavily into distorted synths dirty beats and vocal snippets recalling Death in Vegas more than rave-era Prodigy.
Some longtime fans missed the big hooks and anthems of earlier hits like Firestarter or Breathe but the album has since gained cult respect. As a raw lo-fi industrial electro experiment it stands on its own. A necessary reboot that paved the way for Invaders Must Die in 2009.
