Released in 1970 by B&C Records, Mountains is the third album by Steamhammer and one of their most adventurous. Blending blues rock, progressive rock and folk, it marked a shift toward longer tracks and intricate arrangements. The band’s sound expanded with richer textures and extended solos.
Tracks like Riding on the L&N and Hold That Train showcase Steamhammer's blues roots with harmonica and energetic jams. Levinia adds a folk vibe while Henry Lane introduces acoustic elements that recall Pentangle. The nine-minute title track Mountains stands out with its moody dynamic build and instrumental intensity.
Guitarist Martin Pugh’s playing is sharp and expressive while Steve Davy’s bass anchors the flow with subtle shifts. Drummer Mick Bradley delivers tight powerful grooves that shape the album’s feel. This album also features Louis Cennamo of Renaissance who adds sonic depth and texture to the arrangements.
Mountains reflects Steamhammer’s evolution from British blues outfit to a more experimental and expressive force. The vinyl pressing captures analog warmth and the interplay between acoustic and electric dynamics. It's a must for fans of Groundhogs, Taste and early Jethro Tull.
