Jack White – Boarding House Reach is his third solo album released on March 23 2018 through Third Man Records in collaboration with Columbia Records and XL Recordings. It marks a departure from his raw garage rock style embracing psychedelic, funk, hip hop and electronic music. It was recorded across Nashville New York and Los Angeles studios.
Connected by Love opens with warm synths gospel harmonies and a heavy distorted climax blending soul with fuzzed-out blues. It leads into Why Walk a Dog? a stark minimalist track that critiques human control with eerie restraint and robotic calm. Corporation later injects a funk rock groove built on percussion jam and barked commands.
Over and Over and Over crashes in with relentless rhythm originally written for The White Stripes and nearly used by Jay-Z. Ice Station Zebra shifts into experimental hip hop merging beat poetry sample chops and piano stabs. White enlists players like Louis Cato and Bobby Allende to sculpt the album's loose frantic style.
Reviews were split with Pitchfork citing its chaos and Rolling Stone calling it "daringly weird." White ditches safety and leans into risk embracing absurdity and spontaneity. Boarding House Reach doesn’t aim to please but to explore making it one of his most unpredictable and divisive albums.
