Released in 1958 on Blue Note Records Somethin' Else is a landmark jazz session led by alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley featuring Miles Davis on trumpet. Though issued under Adderley's name the album’s cool spacious tone reflects Davis’s leadership and restraint more than Cannonball’s usual fiery hard bop style.
The album opens with an iconic reading of Autumn Leaves that blends moody introspection and lyrical soloing. Miles’s muted trumpet sets the mood while Adderley responds with warmth and swing. Love for Sale is edgier and faster with driving piano from Hank Jones and crisp drums by Art Blakey.
The title track Somethin’ Else showcases modal exploration with space between phrases that gives each soloist room to breathe. One for Daddy-O is a bluesy nod with laid-back swagger while Dancing in the Dark ends the record on a romantic and reflective note. Bassist Sam Jones keeps everything grounded with deep rhythmic clarity.
Somethin' Else is essential listening for fans of lyrical modern jazz. It’s a beautiful intersection between two giants with Miles guiding the mood and Cannonball adding soul and spirit. One of Blue Note’s most elegant and enduring albums this session captures magic in every note.
